CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION:
- Physician's referral
- Current driver's license or driving permit
- Resources to cover the cost of the service (private or insurance)
- Auto insurance may be required
Registered Occupational Therapists who are Certified Driver
Rehabilitation Specialists (CDRS) are available to provide these
evaluations. We are sensitive to the needs of people who are
coping with difficulties arising from various neurological problems.
We offer a three-component evaluation, which consists of the
following:
1. An Occupational Therapy Evaluation of pre-driving skills, which
includes strength, sensation, range of motion, coordination,
muscle tone, proprioceptive and kinesthetic movements, visual
perceptual skills, vision screening, reaction time, and reflexes.
Coordination of adaptive equipment may be needed.
2. A Brief Neuropsychological Screening to assess attention and
concentration, speed of processing, functional memory, sequential
thinking, and problem solving. If the results from the clinical
testing indicate the candidate has potential for driving, then
Step 3 is initiated.
3. A Behind-The-Wheel Evaluation with a certified driving rehabilitation specialist in a vehicle with instructor safety equipment.
This information is compiled and used to develop a written plan,
which may include recommendations for:
- Driver training
- Individualized training for new drivers
- Rehabilitation, including equipment and training
- Driving with restrictions
- Change in driving status Information and recommendations will be provided to the referring
physician for final decision making about driving. |
